La Gran Piedra and the Sierra Maestra
The Sierra Maestra is a beautiful collection of trees and ferns of different colors in the forests of Santiago de Cuba, but the real attraction is La Gran Piedra, or “The Big Rock”. This monolith rests atop of the Sierra Maestra at a height of 1200 meters and provides amazing sights. If you scale the rock on a clear day, many say you can see Haiti and Jamaica from the top. Cespedes Park
Cespedes Park is the perfect way to take it easy and stroll around. One of the more beautiful and energetic squares in the city, it features a bronze bust of Carlos Manuel de Céspedes at the heart of the square, the man who kick-started Cuban independence in 1868. Bands may be performing at times, as well as other artisans. The park is of historic significance as well – Fidel Castro graced its balcony in 1959, trumpeting the triumph of the Revolution. Parque de Baconao
One of the most enjoyable spots for photo-ops while in Santiago de Cuba, this national park in nearby Siboney is filled with giant statues of various animals and dinosaurs. There’s also a Botanical Garden called the Jardin Ave de Paraiso, as well as an aquarium, lagoon, and farm. Depending on the weather, it could be a bit of a hot day, but it makes for a nice little field trip, especially with children. Parque de Baconao
Jardin de los Helechos
This 3,000 square foot tropical garden is home to over 350 types of ferns and over 90 types of orchids. The garden is a private collection of Manuel Caluff, who donated to the Academia de Ciencias de Cuba (Academy of Science) in 1984. Between November and January is the best time to visit to enjoy the orchids. The gardens are along the road to El Caney and close to Plaza de Marte, making it easy to get to/from the gardens via bus or taxi. Jardin de los Helechos
