Top Historical Attractions in Santiago de Cuba

Santiago de Cuba is considered by many to be the birthplace of the Cuban Revolution. The city sits along the Sierra Maestra, Cuba’s largest mountain which binds the provinces of Granma and Santiago de Cuba together along the island’s southern coast, while making much of the area inaccessible – something rebel groups led by Fidel Castro became very fond of. Our air charter team can arrange to fly you privately to the island so you can learn more about Cuba’s rich history. Check out some of the historically significant landmarks and attractions listed below to explore after your private charter flight.

Castillo de San Pedro de la Roca
This castle is the best way to get a good look at the city after your charter flight arrives. The views up here can’t be beat, and the castle itself, the result of commercial and political rivalries in the 17th century Caribbean, is just as amazing. Go on a tour through hidden rooms and take in grand views of the port. The is another castle built by the Spaniards to protect the city during wartime and from pirates. The castle became a heritage site in 1997.

Plaza De La Revolucion
Like every other city in Cuba, Santiago has its own “Revolution Square”. The square is located at the junction of two avenues, anchored by a statue of Antonio Maceo, a local hero and native of Santiago. There’s a small museum dedicated to his life beneath the giant mound. The Teatro Heredia and the National Bus Station are also near the plaza.

The Clandestine Struggle Museum
For a peek into one of the waves of the Revolution, this museum looks at the movement of Frank Pais of Santiago de Cuba, and the role of the residents during the revolution. In 1956, it was set on fire, but has been restored since.

Diego Velazquez Museum
For a look into the 16th Century, spend an hour or two at the Diego Velazquez Museum while in Santiago de Cuba. The architecture of the building is very nice, and you can learn a lot about old colonial Cuba by going on a guided tour of the museum. The service and guides are said to be very knowledgeable and friendly.

El Cobre Basilica (Our Lady of Charity)
The Cobre Basilica, also known as the National Shrine Basilica of Our Lady of Charity, is a very important part of Cuban culture, and many Cubans travel to the Basilica on pilgrimage. All around, it is a very spiritual place, and the people of Cuba not only treat it with respect, but view it as a source of strength. The building is treated as a donation center, not just for money, but for foods and needs required by the underprivileged.
